Barbed wire remains the standard choice for fencing large cattle pastures and long rural perimeters, for a simple reason: nothing else covers that much ground at a comparable cost per linear foot of fence line. Multiple strands of twisted, barbed steel wire are run under tension between wood or metal posts, spaced and counted based on what's being contained — cattle typically need fewer strands than a fence meant to also stop smaller or more determined animals.
Strand count and spacing
A typical cattle fence runs 3 to 5 strands, spaced closer together near the ground where a calf or smaller animal might otherwise slip under the bottom strand. More strands add cost and labor but also add containment reliability — the right number depends on what's actually being fenced in (or out), not a one-size default.
