Why T-posts are the default line post
They're fast to install (driven directly into the ground rather than requiring a dug and concreted hole), they don't rot the way wood does, and they cost less per post than an equivalent wood line post — which matters enormously on a fence line that might run thousands of feet and need hundreds of posts. Wire attaches to a T-post with simple clips rather than staples, which is quicker to install and easier to adjust or repair later than pulling and re-driving staples on a wood post.
Where T-posts aren't the right choice
T-posts aren't used at corners, ends, or gates, because they don't have the mass or anchoring to resist the concentrated lateral pull those points take from wire tension or gate swing — those locations get properly braced wood or heavy-duty steel posts set in concrete instead. A fence built entirely on T-posts with no reinforced corners is one of the more common amateur fence-building mistakes, since it looks fine on day one but starts leaning at every corner within a season or two once the wire's tension finds the weakest point in the system.
Spacing and driving depth
Standard line-post spacing for most wire fence styles runs somewhere in the 8 to 12 foot range, tightened up on rolling terrain or for animals that put more pressure on the fence. Driving depth matters as much as spacing — a post that's driven shallow to save time is the single most common reason a section of otherwise sound wire fence starts leaning uniformly along its length, since every post is slightly under-anchored rather than one post having an obvious, isolated problem.
Repair
A bent or pulled T-post is usually a straightforward swap — pull the damaged post, drive a new one at the same spot, and re-attach the wire, without needing to touch the wire itself if it's still in good condition. This is one of the fastest and least expensive repairs across any wire fence style, which is part of why T-posts remain the practical choice for line posts even though they're not appropriate everywhere on a fence.
T-post caps and safety
An uncapped T-post has a genuinely sharp top edge, which is both a safety concern (for people, pets, and livestock brushing past it) and a real liability consideration on any property with regular foot traffic near the fence line. Plastic safety caps are inexpensive and standard practice on any T-post fence we install, and it's worth checking for missing caps on an existing older fence during a routine walk-through, since caps do eventually crack or fall off over years of sun exposure.
