A barbed wire fence is one of the most economical ways to mark and contain a large piece of acreage, but "simple" doesn't mean "forgiving." A fence built with the wrong post spacing, weak corners, or loose tension will sag, lean, and fail years before a properly built one.
Safety first
Barbed wire is exactly as sharp as it sounds. Gloves, sturdy boots, and eye protection are the baseline, and stretching wire under tension is not a one-person job — having a second set of hands matters both for the work and for safety if a strand snaps back under tension.
Planning the layout
Before any posts go in the ground, the fence line needs to be surveyed and marked, with particular attention to where corners, gates, and grade changes will fall. Corner and brace assemblies

Setting line posts
Consistent spacing and depth matter more than most people expect. Wooden line posts generally need to be set at least 2.5 feet deep to hold firm against wire tension and weather over time. Uneven spacing or shallow-set posts are a common source of leaning fence lines a few years down the road.
Tensioning the wire
Wire stretchers are used to pull each strand to consistent, even tension before it's fastened to the posts. Wire that's too loose sags and invites livestock to push through or over it; wire that's over-tensioned puts unnecessary stress on posts and can snap. Getting this right is as much a matter of feel and experience as it is following a spec.
