Fencing West of the Lake: Point Blank, Oakhurst and Dodge
The road from the US-190 bridge to Huntsville runs through one kind of country. Here is what the properties along it share, how we fence them, and where to find each town's own page.
Drive west from Onalaska across the US-190 bridge and the lake drops behind you quickly. Point Blank sits on the west shore; past it the road runs through Oakhurst in San Jacinto County, then Dodge in Walker County, and on into Huntsville. The whole stretch is pine and hardwood timber with pasture and hay in the clearings, small acreages along the highway, and lake subdivisions where the side roads reach the water at the Point Blank end. We cover it on the same drive, and the fence work along it rhymes from one end to the other.
What these properties share
- Trees on the fence line. Almost every job west of the lake starts with clearing, and every fence has to be built around roots and limbs. Clearing fences and fence rows.
- Cattle and horses in the clearings. Barbed wire and field fence on braced corners, horse fence that is smooth and visible, pens at the barn.
- Feral hogs and deer. Hog panel around gardens and yards, tall deer fence around anything green, game fence on the hunting tracts.
- Long driveways. Tube or ornamental driveway gates, usually with a solar opener because there is no power at the road.
- Dogs on wooded lots. Black vinyl-coated chain link that disappears into the trees.
Point Blank

Oakhurst

Dodge
A small Walker County community between Oakhurst and Huntsville, with the same pasture-and-pine mix. Dodge is not on our main service list, but it is on the road we drive, and we take fence, gate and repair work there case by case, scheduled with Huntsville-area days.
Repairs along the highway
Trees on the fence are the most common call west of the lake, followed by gates that drag and corners that have pulled. We clear, reset and rebuild, including on fences we did not build. See fence repair.
Before we come out
Along this stretch the estimate starts with the trees and the line: where the pins are, how much of the fence runs through timber, and whether old wire is in it. Then the animals, the dog and the gates, and for a Point Blank lake lot, the slope and the community's rules. Photos and a rough footage with the request help us bring the right material on the first trip.
How the three towns differ
Point Blank is lake lots first and pasture second; Oakhurst is wooded lots and hunting land; Dodge is open pasture and small farms closer to Huntsville. The fence changes with the ground: view-friendly metal and privacy fence at the lake end, chain link and wire in the woods, barbed wire and field fence on braced corners where it opens up.
