It is a question worth asking, and one we have pondered since the year 2005, though in considerably plainer English on most job sites. Still, had the Bard needed a fence around his place at Stratford, we like to think he would have called someone local, insured, and unbothered by a little iambic pentameter.
Act I: To fence, or not to fence
That is rarely the question. The real question is what kind of fence, and why. A fence that looketh fair from the road but containeth no goat is a tragedy in the making, much like a subplot with no resolution. Purpose first: privacy, containment, security, or curb appeal. Act II: The wooden chorus
Our wood fences play the leading role in most yards around the lake: privacy fence for those who would rather not perform their backyard business before an audience, picket for a more genteel, open affair, and horizontal for the modern stage. Cedar or treated pine, both acquit themselves well against the Texas elements, though neither, alas, against a truly determined dog.
Act III: Metal, a supporting cast of steel
Enter metal fencing, stage right: chain link for the practical among us, ornamental steel for those who would have their boundary double as a statement piece, and aluminum for those who tire of rust as swiftly as Hamlet tired of Denmark. None require soliloquies to maintain, a rare and welcome mercy.
Act IV: The pastoral scene
For those whose stage is acreage rather than courtyard, farm and ranch fencing, corral, barbed wire, field fence, cattle panel and more, keeps the four-legged players from wandering off-script. A fence built for cattle differs greatly from one built for hogs, much as a comedy differs from a history play; cast the wrong style and there is trouble by Act V.
Act V: The gate, wherein all is resolved
Every good play needs an entrance, and every good fence a gate that swings true and latches without a struggle.
